The original Kyosho Optima was a rear mounted motor 4wd buggy with a chain drive. It shared the chassis with other models including Javelin and Salute. The Javelin uses a pipe-frame type body. The Salute uses beefier suspension arms, bigger gold shocks, modified motor and full ball bearings similar to that of Turbo Optima. The Optima Pro was like a combination of the regular Optima and the Turbo with different shocks, steering servo mounting, a special aerodynamic body and an undertray. The Optima Mid has a different structure with a mid mounted motor as well as a belt drive system.
