If you have batteries inside the transmitter for years chance is that a leak may have taken place. In fact alkaline batteries are prone to leak when left alone for too long. When this happened all the contact plates and even the wires would have become unusable.
It is not easy to get a new battery compartment that fits, so it may be a better solution to rewire it to use rechargable pack instead.
As you can see from the photo, wiring is pretty simple. Two wires only. I recommend that you replace the two wires by soldering new wires onto the contact points.
