As can be seen from this photo, when the gear box cover cracks (which can happen quite easily), loose gears will result and will eventually lead to gear striping. Unfortunately, without a metal replacement this problem seems to be difficult to solve.
A temporary fix is to use super glue to a kind of glue back the pieces, then use a soldering iron to melt the plastic evenly.
