The Arii Maqueguia is a fascinating relic from the golden era of Japanese plastic model kits, representing a time when the boundaries between static scale models and functional toys were delightfully blurred, and it was produced by the now-defunct Arii Seisakusho, a company that later transitioned into the model train manufacturer Micro Ace, offering a unique window into the inventive spirit of 1980s and 1990s hobby culture. At its core, the Maqueguia was a 1/20 scale motorized model kit of a futuristic, six-wheeled off-road buggy that was designed to be built and then driven, featuring a motor that could power the vehicle across various surfaces, and it was part of a series of 6WD Off-roader kits, a concept that was quite novel and appealing at the time. The two most prominent releases were the 6WD Mad Race Car Maqueguia, which debuted in 1985 as a new tooling, and the 6WD Off-roader Series Maqueguia, released in 1992, and both were packaged in distinctive rigid top-opening boxes. The Maqueguia’s appeal lay in its combination of aggressive, futuristic styling and functional capability, and for many builders it fulfilled a childhood dream of owning a rugged, go-anywhere vehicle that could be piloted around the room or on rough outdoor terrain, while its six-wheel-drive configuration was a standout feature that promised superior traction and a unique, almost tank-like appearance that set it apart from the more conventional two- and four-wheel-drive buggies of the era. Today, the Arii Maqueguia is a coveted item among vintage plastic model collectors and enthusiasts of retro Japanese kits, and like many of Arii’s offerings, which included everything from Macross mecha to classic cars, these kits are long out of production and can be difficult to find, yet their rarity and the nostalgic charm of a motorized 1/20 scale buggy ensure they remain a prized piece of modeling history for those who remember the thrill of building and running these motorized kits or for collectors who appreciate the quirky and inventive designs of Japan’s hobby past.
