Using a large pinion

>> Tech Tip - Drive Train , Tech Tip - Motor >> Using a large pinion

Using a large pinion gear on an RC car changes the gear ratio, which can significantly affect the vehicle’s performance and durability. While it often leads to higher top speed, it comes with several drawbacks.

When you install a larger pinion, you’re effectively increasing the gear ratio, which means the motor has to work harder to turn the drivetrain. This reduces torque at the wheels, making the car slower to accelerate, especially noticeable in off-road or heavy-load conditions. The motor ends up drawing more current to maintain performance, which leads to increased heat buildup in both the motor and the ESC. Prolonged overheating can reduce motor efficiency, damage internal components, or even cause thermal shutdowns.

Another consequence is increased battery drain. Since the motor works harder, it pulls more amperage, which shortens runtime and may stress the battery pack, especially if it’s not rated for high current draw. Also, the drivetrain experiences more strain. The higher speed and reduced mechanical advantage can lead to greater wear on gears, bearings, and shafts. If the spur and pinion aren’t perfectly meshed, this wear can accelerate quickly.
