Free Tech Tips – gearbox ratio

>> Tech Tip - Drive Train , Tech Tips >> Free Tech Tips – gearbox ratio

When browsing through the R/C product brochures, you often see the term “GearBox Ratio” which says something like 8:1 or 7.5:1 …etc. As an example, the Kyosho PureTen EP Alpha 2 4WD has a factory default gearbox ratio of 8:1, meaning the motor has to complete 8 rotations in order to turn the wheels around just once.

Comparing 8:1 with, let’s say, 10:1, 8:1 gives less torque but higher top speed. 8:1 is therefore a “higher” gear ratio.
