Don’t mesh the motor pinion gear too close with the spur gear or the motor will have a hard time turning. At the same time, don’t mesh them too loose or gear stripping will result. Fine tuning is necessary to get the motor mounted right. When properly set, you should be able to have the wheels spun forward freely and silently.
