“Gear pitch” can be thought of as the closeness of the gear teeth. A 21DP gear has 21 teeth per inch, while a 30DP gear has 30 teeth per inch (meaning the teeth stay closer together).

Why does it matter? Think about it, assuming you want to change the gear ratio from, let’s say, 3:1 to 6:1. If the pitch is the same, the size of the entire gear will have to be doubled in order to accommodate the extra teeth. By keeping the teeth closer, more teeth can be accommodated without increasing the overall gear size.
