The choice between metal and plastic spur gears in RC cars depends heavily on performance needs, durability expectations, and driving conditions.

Metal spur gears are typically used when strength and durability are top priorities. They can handle high torque and power without stripping or wearing out quickly, making them ideal for high-speed racing, powerful brushless motors, and off-road bashing where sudden shocks and heavy loads are common. Because of their rigidity, metal gears are less forgiving under load, but they last significantly longer and are less prone to deformation. However, they are also heavier, generate more noise, and may increase wear on mating gears if not properly matched.

Plastic spur gears, on the other hand, are lighter and quieter. They’re often used in entry-level or stock RC cars due to their lower cost and ease of replacement. In setups where weight reduction is important or when torque levels are moderate, plastic gears can perform just fine. They also tend to create less wear on the rest of the drivetrain. But under heavy stress or with aggressive driving, plastic gears can strip or melt—especially if the mesh is not correctly set or the motor generates too much heat.
