Nikko Dictator II RC conversion

If you’re into vintage RC buggies, the Nikko Dictator 2 is a real throwback gem. Introduced around 1987 by Nikko, this 1 / 10‐scale 4WD buggy stood out in its day for offering what looked like “hobby-grade” features in a ready-to-run package.

The original “Dictator” series from Nikko started earlier in the mid-’80s, and by the time the Dictator 2 hit the market, RC fans had begun to realise it wasn’t just a toy. The 1987 Dictator 2 brought in twin motors, full four-wheel drive, and a rugged chassis. According to advertised specs: it’s a ready to run (RTR) 4WD buggy, with two motors driving both ends of the drivetrain. What this meant in practice: for a department-store purchase price, you got features that many “cheap RC toys” lacked—servicing access, a full 4WD layout, and upgrade potential. Over the years the chassis has become a favourite among modders and vintage RC collectors.

People convert the Nikko Dictator 2 into a “real” RC because the chassis is way better than the old toy-grade electronics sitting inside it. The hardware is like a classic car with a weak engine: the frame is solid, the suspension layout is decent, the size is proper 1/10 scale, and the twin-motor 4WD drivetrain has a ton of potential… but the stock electronics choke it.

Not every vintage toy chassis can take real power, but the Dictator 2 can handle 2S LiPo, strong brushed motors (or even mild brushless), and proper servos without exploding immediately. It’s a friendly mod platform.
