The jet pump uses an impeller inside a housing to draw water in from the bottom or rear of the boat and eject it forcefully out of a nozzle. The direction of the nozzle can be adjusted for steering, eliminating the need for a rudder. The impeller is enclosed, reducing the risk of damage from debris or weeds in the water, unlike exposed propellers. And paired with a shallow-draft hull, such design allows the boat to operate in shallow or rocky waters where propeller-driven boats might get stuck.
