There are 2 major types of R/C differential gear. The gear based differential (gear diff) requires almost no tuning and is usually equipped with shaft driven 4WD and 2WD. The ball based differential (ball diff) gives more room for tuning (in fact it requires regular tuning and maintenance) but is said to be more troublesome (again, due to the need for careful tuning). It is often found in belt driven 4WD.
