Shaft drive gives better response and controllable power on demand. As long as the drive system is properly sealed, it is hassle free and almost maintenance free (it is much more difficult to break a shaft than a belt after all). Almost no tuning is required on the shaft. However, a shaft drive system is heavier (due to the use of more gears) and is usually much louder during acceleration.
