DJI drones can be controlled using a mobile phone through the DJI Fly, DJI GO 4, or DJI Pilot apps, depending on the drone model. These apps connect to the drone via Wi-Fi or through a remote controller that links to the phone. The mobile device serves as a display and control interface, providing real-time video feeds, telemetry data, and flight settings.
When using only a mobile phone, the drone is controlled through on-screen touch controls and motion sensors. The app provides virtual joysticks for movement, while tilt and gesture controls allow for additional control options. The phone’s touchscreen also enables takeoff, landing, and intelligent flight modes such as Follow Me, Waypoint Navigation, and ActiveTrack, where the drone autonomously follows a subject.
When paired with a physical remote controller, the mobile phone acts as a live video monitor and settings hub. The controller provides physical joysticks for precise movements while the mobile app offers advanced flight parameters, camera adjustments, and intelligent flight modes.
Most DJI drones use OcuSync, Wi-Fi, or Lightbridge transmission technology to maintain a stable connection between the drone and the mobile device. This allows for real-time HD video streaming, telemetry updates (such as battery status, altitude, and GPS location), and seamless control adjustments. Additionally, users can download firmware updates, review flight logs, and edit or share footage directly from the mobile app.
