Free Tech Tips – gear grease

If your gearbox has a proper seal, dirt should hardly be able to get in. Regular cleaning is therefore not required. However, the gears will eventually wear out and the lubing grease will need to be replaced accordingly. This is when you should take apart the gearbox and clean the gears one by one. Thoroughly clean the gears by removing all the existing grease and then applying new grease. You may also take this opportunity to flush-clean the ball bearings holding the gear shafts.

The grease that you use must not be corrosive. When you go into your local hardware shop you want to ask for grease that is plastic friendly.
