Belt drive has a simpler design due to the use of less gears along the drive chain, and it keeps the weight down for the same reason. It tends to run quieter as well.
However, the belt is more subject to wear and tear (it will start weakening and stretching over time) especially upon frequent hard accelerations and you will need to regularly adjust its tension just to prevent it from skipping.
Another thing – it is widely believed that belt drive car often induces drag (i.e. belt drag), which can make the drive system quite inefficient.
