RC techtip: servo sizing for RC boat

RTR boats often come with a low cost servo that is either too small or too unique. To make sure steering is reliable, you will want to use a standard size servo that is powerful enough to manipulate the rudder. In this video a FT 0 10 is shown. It has a uniquely sized servo that is quite fragile but is expensive to replace. Even though a smaller servo can fit in easily, it just doesn’t have the torque to turn the large rudder.

The stock servo mount is not big enough for a standard servo. To use one, you must install a new DIY servo mount. Then you must use hot glue, double sided tape and zip tie to tighten the servo.
