Then, from a small British company known for its quirky four-wheel-drive belt-drive machines, comes a car draped in a white cloth, only hinting at the radical shape lurking underneath. When that cloth finally came off, the RC community collectively gasped, because this was the Schumacher Top Cat, and it looked like nothing anyone had ever seen before.

While every other manufacturer was busy building boxy, conventional buggies, Schumacher decided to think completely outside the box. The Top Cat wasn’t just another two-wheel-drive racer; it was a rolling statement of intent from a company that always marched to the beat of its own drum. Its most shocking feature was unquestionably the front suspension. Instead of traditional upright shocks poking through the bodywork, the Top Cat used laydown front shocks, which were alloy coil-over oil-filled units mounted horizontally and hidden away under the sleek polycarbonate shell. From the side, the effect was exceptionally simplified and lightweight, making the car look like a spaceship compared to the chunky, bulky buggies of the era.

Yet the innovations didn’t stop with that radical front end. Schumacher fitted a genius front “Crashback” system, an ingenious O-ring design that was engineered to minimise front-end crash damage, a simple but brilliant idea that saved countless front ends from destruction during those inevitable racing mishaps. Underneath the body, the transmission was equally unique. While most two-wheel-drive cars of the time relied on noisy gears, the Top Cat featured efficient Kevlar drive belts paired with a fourteen-ball ball differential, an invention by Schumacher founder Cecil Schumacher himself that dated all the way back to 1978. The entire drivetrain was smooth, sophisticated, and utterly distinct from the competition. Complementing this was another piece of eighties engineering brilliance in the form of Schumacher’s unique telescoping universal joint-style driveshafts, which were crafted from durable nylon and added yet another layer of innovation to a car bursting with new ideas.

Of course, such radical thinking inevitably came with its fair share of challenges. The car was notoriously tricky to set up, and as any veteran will tell you, the setup was absolutely crucial to extracting any performance from it. Those stunning laydown shocks, while visually breathtaking, could be an absolute pain to tune correctly, often requiring much thicker oil than conventional setups, and some owners reported that the belt-driven gearbox could feel tight and rough if the manufacturing tolerances weren’t absolutely perfect. But when the car was dialled in, oh, it was pure magic. The Top Cat was built for the tight, technical tracks favoured in the UK and Europe, and on its home turf, it proved to be untouchable. In 1989, the car silenced any remaining doubters by winning the EFRA European Championships with driver Jamie Booth behind the wheel, cementing its place in the history books.

Today, the Top Cat occupies a truly special position in the RC hall of fame. It is remembered as the most individualistic and desirable car in Schumacher’s two-wheel-drive lineage, a machine whose influence was so profound that it directly spawned the famous Cougar line of buggies. Its legend was so enduring that Schumacher eventually released a faithful “Top Cat Classic” re-release in 2018, complete with thoughtful updates for modern LiPo batteries and brushless motors. The Top Cat wasn’t just a car; it was a statement that proved British engineering could be bold, beautiful, and brutally fast all at once. It dared to be different when conformity was the easy path, and for that brave defiance, it will forever be remembered as one of the most radical, rebellious, and revered buggies ever to grace a dirt track.

Picture this: it is 1988, and the off-road RC world is firmly in the grip of the Associated RC10, a car so dominant it has essentially set the template for what a two-wheel-drive buggy should be.
