The primary benefit is a significant reduction in that slop, providing a much more direct and confident feel with predictable straight-line tracking. While the stock plastic steering is prone to flex and breakage under stress, especially at the pivot points or after impacts, a metal set is very durable and resistant to crashes and high-torque servos, making it a good long-term investment. Furthermore, the increased rigidity of a metal steering rack often allows for a greater maximum steering angle, enabling tighter turns and better maneuverability for racing or drifting.

To understand why the stock setup is problematic, it helps to know that the TT-01 and TT-02 are designed with intentionally loose tolerances to ensure the suspension and steering move freely, especially when dirty. This creates a large amount of play, or slop, in the stock plastic steering linkages and hubs, meaning you can physically move the front wheels several millimeters left or right without the servo ever moving. The result is a car that feels unresponsive and wanders at high speeds. Additionally, the plastic components are prone to flexing under load, which further reduces precision, and they can break more easily in a crash or when using a more powerful servo.

For implementation, the best results come from purchasing a full “alloy ball-raced steering rack.” Many complete sets replace not just the arms but also the central bridge and include bearings at the pivot points, which is the most effective way to eliminate play. While a metal steering set makes the biggest difference, you can further improve response by replacing the standard servo saver with a solid horn or high-torque saver to eliminate another source of vague steering. If a full metal set is too expensive, even upgrading just the steering turnbuckle linkages to an aluminum set can make a noticeable improvement by removing flex from the tie rods. Ultimately, upgrading to a metal steering set transforms the driving experience from that of a toy-grade vehicle to something that feels much more like a proper hobby-grade race car.

Upgrading the TT-01 and TT-02 to a metal steering set is widely considered one of the most effective modifications you can make because it directly addresses the biggest flaw in these entry-level kits, which is excessive steering “slop” that leads to vague and unpredictable handling.
